The Foundation of Green Certification Programs Energy Star is the most widely recognized symbol for efficiency in the country. This process ensures that the home will use 15% less energy than standard code-built homes. Energy Star is also the "core" of green certifications such as WNC HealthyBuilt and LEED for Homes. To earn the Energy Star, a home must follow a qualification process through the duration of construction. The general process overview goes something like this:
This process begins with an analysis of the house plans. At this stage, energy related details are assessed using a computer software program that projects the home's energy use. The software rates the home on a scale of 100-to-0. 100 is the score of a code-built house, while 0 is the score of a zero-energy home. Energy Star requires a score of 85 or less. |
