Energy Star
Existing Buildings New Construction Training

The Foundation of Green Certification Programs

Energy Star is the most widely recognized symbol for efficiency in the country.  This process ensures that the home will use 15% less energy than standard code-built homes.  Energy Star is also the "core" of green certifications such as WNC HealthyBuilt and LEED for Homes.

To earn the Energy Star, a home must follow a qualification process through the duration of construction.

The general process overview goes something like this:

  1. Analysis of the home with respect to energy consumption
  2. Framing & insulation inspections
  3. Diagnostic testing of ductwork and building envelope leakage rates
  4. Certification processed and delivered

This process begins with an analysis of the house plans. At this stage, energy related details are assessed using a computer software program that projects the home's energy use. The software rates the home on a scale of 100-to-0. 100 is the score of a code-built house, while 0 is the score of a zero-energy home. Energy Star requires a score of 85 or less.
