System Expectations
Existing Buildings New Construction Training

What do we expect from our HVAC systems?

The Basic Needs

At a minimum, here's what we like to see in a properly functioning system:

  • Ability to maintain comfort in every room (heating, cooling, & humidity control)
  • Ability to maintain a healthy living environment (clean, fresh air)
  • It is optimized for maximum efficiency (keep what you pay for)
  • It doesn’t endanger the safety of the occupant (combustion safety + infiltration)
  • It doesn’t decrease the durability of the building (infiltration + humidity control)

The Missing Links

Based on what we see in the field, there seem to be a few missing links:

  • The majority of units are improperly sized (excessive cost + poor humidity control)
  • Units have been replaced/added without addressing ductwork defficiencies
  • Air filtration is being ignored (harms system efficiency and air quality)
  • Systems are not calibrated for maximum efficiency/effectiveness
  • There is a lack of fresh-air ventilation (people & houses need to breathe)
